Preparing For Your Treatment
Your New Patient Checklist.
Before your treatment you should:
What To Expect
Before we get any further, let's talk about needles. The needles used in acupuncture are very, very small. For example, ten of our needles can fit inside the shaft of the needle that's used to draw your blood. Most of our patients only feel about half the needles that go in and those are just a little uncomfortable. The needles may be inserted in various points including in areas away from your area of your pain. Most conditions can be managed by only using points on the arms and legs, ears and head.
What to Wear
Please wear loose fitting clothes that allow the sleeves and pant legs to be rolled up. Choose something that will allow you to be comfortable and if you're running cold you might bring a scarf or soft sweatshirt to help cover up and keep extra toasty. Also, avoid wearing dresses or something that prevents us gaining access to the abdomen.
The treatment is delivered in a group space, so please be respectful of the other resting patients. Avoid bringing strong odors with you and try to maintain the quiet space that is conducive to the healing of those around you.
...a little snack before
It is encouraged that you eat something small before your treatment. Acupuncture points are like sets of instructions for your system. With each point, your body responds with a particular internal action to resolve your symptoms and improve your body's function. This response relies on your body being ready to do some work, requiring fuel. (Don't overeat either, as being too full will interfere with your treatment as well.)
During your Treatment
In order to arrive at the diagnosis and select the correct treatment points for you, your clinician will review your symptoms and discuss your health, review your tongue and pulse, and complete any additional exams that may be needed. The points are then prepared and needled. Once the needles have been inserted, your clinician will let you relax for 30-45 minutes. We may check back in to review your pulses or adjust your needles partway through your treatment. If you experience any discomfort from your needles during the treatment please let your clinician know so that they can adjust the needles for your comfort.
Most patients find the treatments very calming, and many patients take advantage of the opportunity to get a quick nap in. Enjoy your rest!
After your Treatment
Most patients leave relaxed and calm. The effects of the treatment continue to set in over the following several hours. If you are able to stay relaxed and allow the treatment to finish working, you'll experience bigger gains and faster resolution of your complaints. Additionally, please take note of how you're feeling so you can tell your clinician at your next treatment. Besides taking it easy for a few hours, no additional restrictions apply. You are free to shower, bath and exercise as you normally would.
