What To Expect

The Needles

Before we get any further, let's talk about needles. The needles used in acupuncture are very, very small. For example, ten of our needles can fit inside the shaft of the needle that's used to draw your blood. They are gentle and receiving treatment is easy and relaxing. The locations of the needles can be on the arms, legs, torso and ears and they may be inserted in areas other than where your pain is located.

What to Wear

Please wear loose fitting clothes that allow the sleeves and pant legs to be rolled up. Choose something that will allow you to be comfortable and if you're running cold you might bring a scarf or soft sweatshirt to help cover up.

The Setting

The treatment is delivered in both group settings and in private rooms. The appropriate treatment for you will depend on the severity and complexity of your condition. During your consultation we'll recommend a treatment form that makes the most sense for your health goals.

...a little snack before

It is encouraged that you eat something small before your treatment. Acupuncture points are like sets of instructions for your system. With each point, your body responds with a particular internal action to resolve your symptoms and improve your body's function. This response relies on your body being ready to do some work, requiring fuel. (Don't overeat either, as being too full will interfere with your treatment as well.)

During your Treatment

In order to arrive at the diagnosis and select the correct treatment points for you, your clinician will review your symptoms and discuss your health, review your tongue and pulse, and complete any additional exams that may be needed. The points are then prepared and needled. Once the needles have been inserted, your clinician will let you relax for 30-45 minutes. We may check back in to review your pulses or adjust your needles partway through your treatment. If you experience any discomfort from your needles during the treatment please let your clinician know so that they can adjust the needles for your comfort.

Most patients find the treatments very calming, and many patients take advantage of the opportunity to get a quick nap in. Enjoy your rest!

After your Treatment

Most patients leave relaxed and calm. The effects of the treatment continue to set in over the following several hours. If you are able to stay relaxed and allow the treatment to finish working, you'll experience bigger gains and faster resolution of your complaints. Additionally, please take note of how you're feeling so you can tell your clinician at your next treatment. Besides taking it easy for a few hours, no additional restrictions apply. You are free to shower, bath and exercise as you normally would.
